PICF

Philadelphia International Cricket Festival

The Club moved to its current ground, Walker Park, in 1885, and its first visitors were Merion CC, from Philadelphia. In those days, Philadelphia was the hub of US cricket and the Gentlemen of Philadelphia played a number of first-class matches, with great success. Unlike SICC, however, the Philadelphia clubs, except for Haverford College, gradually lost their focus on cricket--until 1972, when Merion arranged two exhibition matches with their old friends Toronto (Canada), Staten Island (New York) and the Prior Cricket Club (Philadelphia) to show Merion members why the club had been founded. This sowed the seeds for the revival of cricket which had ended around 1924.

The first Philadelphia International Cricket Festival, hosted by Merion and British Officers CC was held in 1993 with four teams: Merion (PA), Mad Dogs (NY/CT), British Officers (PA) and Charlotte (NC). The Festival has grown each year since, adding as host clubs Haverford in 1993, Germantown in 1996 and Philadelphia in 1999.

Matches are hosted by Philadelphia CC, Merion CC, Germantown CC, Haverford College CC, and British Officers CC, and visiting teams arrive from all corners of world. The cricket outfields—many of which are used for lawn tennis during the summer—produce the most spectacular and picturesque grounds in US cricket, and the tournament is a marvel of efficiency and good cheer. SICC has been fortunate to participate regularly, and we look forward to continuing a tradition of friendly sporting rivalry that, all told, is about one hundred and fifty years old.
